I am a huge fan of historical fiction. The best works immerse you in an interesting tale while educating you. Within moments of choosing this book as my First Reads option because it was this month’s historical fiction offering, I regretted the decision. This book tries too hard. It is immediately evident that this author would be most comfortable producing beach reads. Instead, she overused her thesaurus to bring on the big words while misusing the small ones. By page two, I’d spotted incorrect usage.BOTTOM LINE: Light casual read made irritating by pretensions to something more. It is a story of dark intrigue and of the young woman’s dramatic adventures happening at the very beginning of the 20-th century. The story is told in the first person by May, who, after death of her mother, moves to San Francisco to live with much richer than her but unknown earlier relatives. Of course things are not exactly what she expected and thus May’s adventures begin. The plot moves fast and reader gets many glimpses of the history of the period as seen by the eyes of May; such as make up of the city’s society, afterwords of the great earthquake, secrets of China town and many others that I can not describe without giving spoilers. The book kept my attention from the beginning to the end. There is not a cheesy romance dominating a plot. But somehow I could not shake up a felling that this book could be easily written 100 years earlier- I think it was because of the plot line. The plot may be not very realistic, but so was the plot of The Count of Monte Cristo, so if you like this kind of a good (but more women-oriented) adventure go for it. I enjoyed it very much, mostly because it delivered a story in which I could fully immerse myself for few hours.Bottom line: Five stars in light historical fiction (with emphasis on light)PS. If you liked this book you will most likely like also the series featuring inspector Lawender by Karen Charlton. And vice versa.
